On Wednesday, Russia's Defense Ministry reported the exchange of 195 'prisoners of war' (POWs) each with Ukraine. This announcement followed Russia's claim a week prior, asserting that Ukrainian forces had downed a military transport plane transporting Ukrainian prisoners of war scheduled for a swap with Russian POWs. According to the Defense Ministry, the transport plane was brought down by missiles fired from across the border in Russia's Belgorod region on January 24. The crash resulted in the tragic loss of all 74 individuals on board, including six crew members and three Russian servicemen, as confirmed by local authorities in Belgorod, which shares a border with Ukraine.

Last week, Ukrainian authorities verified that a planned prisoner exchange was scheduled for that day but announced its cancellation.
