2024 Pakistan polls: ECP Cites Internet Issues For 12-Hour Result Delay

PML-N secured victories in four of the announced results from the 2024 Pakistan polls, while the Pakistan Peoples Party led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari claimed one. The remaining three were won by independent candidates.
Vote counting for the 2024 Pakistan elections commenced shortly after 5 pm, just moments after polling concluded. However, despite more than 12 hours passing, the final results are still pending. By early Friday morning, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had released results for eight out of the 265 contested parliamentary seats on its website.

The special secretary at the ECP attributed the delay in the 2024 Pakistan polls results to an 'internet issue,' refraining from providing further details. The government, facing an economic crisis, had temporarily suspended mobile and internet services as a security measure leading up to the closely monitored election on February 8. These services were partially restored after the conclusion of the voting. The South Asian nation is contending with both economic challenges and heightened terrorism activities in a politically divided environment.

Current Pakistan Election 2024 results show four victories for the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N), led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and one for the Pakistan Peoples Party, headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the son of the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Independents secured the remaining three seats.
The primary competition is anticipated between candidates supported by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, the winner of the previous national election, and Sharif's PML-N, with analysts suggesting military backing for Sharif.

The final results for the cash-strapped Pakistan government formation, requiring 133 parliamentary seats, are expected later in the day as counting continues into Friday morning. Analysts, however, speculate that the vote may not yield a clear winner.

‘Urging Calm’

While the vote count unfolds in Pakistan, UN chief Antonio Guterres issued a statement on Friday urging political leaders and society to maintain a calm atmosphere during the tabulation of election results.
“As Pakistan awaits the election results, I encourage all political leaders and societal segments to uphold a calm atmosphere,” Guterres conveyed in a statement to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
“I am closely monitoring the situation in Pakistan, including today’s general elections,” he mentioned.
Expressing concern, he added, “I am also troubled by reports of incidents of violence and casualties, as well as the suspension of mobile communication services.
