Hungarian Foreign Minister Advocates for Termination of War in Ukraine During Uzhhorod Trip

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó underscored the pressing imperative for peace in Ukraine, underscoring that the preservation of lives hinges solely on peaceful measures. This declaration was conveyed during his recent trip to Uzhhorod, as posted on Facebook on January 29.

In a notable demonstration of solidarity, Szijjártó, joined by Andriy Yermak, the chief of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Presidential Office, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, paid a visit to Calvary, Uzhhorod's largest cemetery. The burial ground serves as the final resting place for numerous Ukrainian soldiers who have succumbed in the ongoing conflict.

Szijjártó's heartfelt message on Facebook, "The battlefield is claiming more lives each day; we cannot permit further casualties! The war must cease, and human lives can only be safeguarded through peace," echoes a deep concern for the increasing human toll of the conflict.

The Hungarian minister and his delegation's visit to Uzhhorod was primarily focused on engaging in discussions with Ukrainian officials. Ahead of the meeting, Yermak expressed his commitment to enhancing relations with Budapest through transparent and sincere dialogue.
Oleg Nikolenko, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, highlighted that the central agenda of these talks was to facilitate a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This meeting is anticipated to yield significant decisions within the EU and further promote the overall development of bilateral relations between Hungary and Ukraine.

In a previous encounter on December 11 in Brussels, Kuleba and Szijjártó met for the first time since the onset of the full-scale invasion. Their discussion revolved around the European Union's decision to initiate negotiations with Ukraine regarding EU accession.

Szijjártó has consistently advocated for halting arms supplies to Ukraine, asserting that it only prolongs the conflict. Additionally, he has opposed sanctions against Russia and engaged in discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to strengthen cooperation. This visit, along with Szijjártó's plea for peace, represents a crucial moment in the ongoing diplomatic endeavors to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
